THE WIND WHISPERER

At fifteen, Anaii is the most important member of her tribe—and the most mysterious. Ever since Anaii can remember, the spirits of the wind have whispered of fertile hunting grounds and imminent enemy attacks. But when her people are ambushed by a brother clan without any apparent cause, the spirits remain eerily silent.
As the village prepares to retaliate, Anaii is pressured by her best friend, Elan, to marry him. It’s an old plea—Elan has spent a lifetime loving her, but Anaii only sees a childhood playmate out of an imposing warrior. Stifled by Elan’s insistence, Anaii escapes into the forest where she meets Jayttin, the beautiful son of the enemy chief.
Enamored by Jayttin’s carefree spirit and hope for peace, she repeatedly sneaks away to be with him, but when her deception is discovered, Elan is devastated. Pledging his lifelong affection, Elan gives her a passionate kiss, and Anaii begins to see her friend in a new light.
While Anaii is tormented over which man she must choose, the wind whispers of a new threat that could destroy both tribes. Only a union will afford a chance at survival, but the reality of that union is based on one thing—which man Anaii chooses to die.

GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY
Young Adult Literature: Cool Pickles or Hot Tamales?

If you’re looking for a “clean” read, it seems like reading young adult literature is a good bet. Readers can enjoy a great storyline without the fear of entering into smut-ridden waters. Still, there’s the question of how racy young adult romances should go. Should romantic scenes be limited to a virtuous hen-peck or is a non-descriptive romp in the sack perfectly fine? The opinions are as endless.

After the release of my first New Adult novel, I received a full spectrum of comments on the “heat” rating of my book. One of the most conservative reviewers said she would have given the story five stars if not for a love making scene. My characters in The Lure of Shapinsay consummate their relationship, but nothing is described in detail. You might compare the sensuality to that of Twilight. The same reviewers were repeatedly offended by the word “hump”. Just to give you an idea of the context, a young Scottish girl named Kait has just started a romance with a selkie—a mythical creature who is a seal in the water and a human on land.

The cool tip of his nose stirred along my neck. “Nae, I’d never hump you for pleasure then leave. I’m here to stay.”
“You’d be the first of your kind,” I said with a flirty grin. “It’s your nature to wound unsuspecting women. Even now I fear you’ll succumb to your instincts and drag me into the sea.”

Before writing my first novel, I never thought twice about the word hump. Now I’m thinking about what other words are off limits. I never considered The Lure of Shapinsay a “hot tamale”, but it is for a few tender-hearted souls.

On the other end of the spectrum, there were a few reviewers who complained that my selkie/human paranormal romance was more of a cool pickle. Using a sensuality index, The Lure of Shapinsay has been rated one flame out of five on allromancebooks.com.

The point is that what’s appropriate in Young Adult literature is very subjective. One thing I’ve learned is that no book suits everyone. Everyone has different tastes. The best way to find the book that’s right for you is to follow book blogs that have tastes similar to your own. That way, you’re sure to end up with the perfect read, whether it is a cool pickle, hot tamale, or something in between.
